Solar shingles and solar tiles

Solar shingles and tiles are types of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV); rather than installing solar panels on top of your roof, you can replace your roofing material with dual-purpose shingles or tiles that provide shelter while generating solar electricity.

This technology is newer to the market, which means it’s harder to find installers with the expertise necessary to do the work. However, solar shingles are becoming more popular each day thanks to the aesthetic benefits they offer.

Common questions

Are solar shingles more expensive than solar panels?

Yes – because solar shingles are a newer product and more difficult to install, they’re often the pricer option, especially for existing roofs that don’t need to be replaced yet. That said, if you’re installing solar shingles on new construction or replacing your roof with this technology, it can be cost competitive with solar panels plus a new roof.

PV type Traditional Solar Panels Tesla Solar Roof Suntegra Solar Shingles

Can I get solar shingle quotes on EnergySage?

Unfortunately, we don’t partner with many companies that provide solar shingle installations. Your best bet is to go directly to one of the manufacturers listed above and find a contractor through their installation network. We highly recommend comparing any quotes you receive from solar shingle installers with solar panel quotes on EnergySage!
