Common questions

Should I replace my roof before going solar?

Well, how old is your roof? If it's towards the end of its life or has multiple layers of shingles, it's more a matter of "when" and not "if" – you want to make sure your roof is able to withstand the weight of the panels and avoid the cost of removing and re-installing solar panels for a roofing job if you can. Roofs with more than 10 years of life left in them are often good to go. If you’re unsure, ask your prospective installer or a roofer for a recommendation – they should be able to give sound advice after inspecting your property.

How much does it cost to remove my panels, if I need to re-roof?

If you need to replace your roof while you have solar panels installed, expect solar panel removal to cost about $1,500 – $6,000.

Do solar installers offer roofing services?

Some do! Even if they don’t, many have strong relationships with roofing companies and can provide references and recommendations (and sometimes discounts) for the work.

Is going solar still worth it if you need to re-roof?

An average solar installation will help you save tens of thousands of dollars over its lifetime. While no one likes to pay for a roofing job, the savings of going solar should make up for it in the long term. Plus, there’s no better time to evaluate solar if you were planning on re-roofing anyway – in fact, your future solar panels will help extend the life of the portion of your roof that they cover!

Can I claim roof replacement costs as part of my solar tax credit?

Tax codes are complicated, so we try to avoid giving any formal advice on this one (we’re clean energy experts, not tax experts!) Your best bet is to ask a tax advisor or accountant.
