Is a solar battery worth it?
Whether or not a solar battery is worth it isn’t always straightforward – it largely depends on why you want to use a battery.
There are three main reasons why it makes sense to install storage: for emergency backup power, if you are installing solar but don’t have one-to-one net metering in your area, and if you are on a more complex utility rate–such as time-of-use (TOU), or demand charges.
From a financial benefits perspective, you can recoup the cost of a battery over its 10-15 year lifespan from electric bill savings if you’re using a battery for rate arbitrage with one of the complex rate plans or net metering situations we mentioned above. If you can benefit from 1:1 retail net metering and have a standard electricity plan, a battery doesn’t often make economic sense, but it can still be worth it for the peace of mind it provides during grid outages.
